What is GST for freelancers?

GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a unified indirect tax in India. As a freelancer, if your annual turnover exceeds ₹20 lakhs (₹10 lakhs for special category states), you are required to register for GST and charge it on your services.

Most freelance services — web development, design, writing, consulting — fall under the 18% GST slab. When you raise an invoice, you add 18% GST on top of your service fee. This GST is collected from your client and deposited with the government.

For intra-state transactions (you and your client are in the same state), GST is split equally into CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST) — each at half the total rate. For inter-state transactions, it becomes IGST at the full rate.

Freelinq automatically calculates and applies the correct GST on every invoice, generates GST-compliant PDF invoices, and tracks your GST liability — so you never have to do this manually.
